But sadly, there are still many weird myths and falsehoods floating around about dentures that deter patients from opting for them. Despite what you’ve maybe heard, dentures can offer your smile quite a bit in terms of look and functionality! Keep reading as we debunk four of the most common myths about dentures.

Myth #1: Dentures Are Unattractive

It’s true that wearing cheap dentures made from inexpensive materials will give you a relatively weird-looking and unattractive smile. However, high-quality dentures look just like your natural teeth and are quite gorgeous! These dentures are made from top-of-the-line materials and utilize neuromuscular principles to enhance your whole face by reducing mouth wrinkles and minimizing loose skin around the neck and chin.

Myth #2: They’re Only for Older Patients

Simply put, dentures are not age-specific; false teeth are used to replace missing natural teeth, and people of all ages can qualify for dentures! Partial dentures, which are designed to replace a single tooth or a few teeth, are common in young people and can be worn and barely detected by others due to their natural appearance. Additionally, individuals who play contact sports as well as those who’ve suffered jaw trauma in some form are often candidates for dentures.

Myth #3: They Can Be Worn 24/7

There are a few different types of dentures, but most of them are removable and not worn 24/7. Fixed dentures (sometimes called implant dentures), which are attached to dental implants, are an exception to this. However, non-fixed dentures are completely removable and need to be taken out at nighttime. This gives you the chance to clean them in an appropriate solution, while also giving your gums and jaw a much-needed break from wearing them.

Myth #4: You Don’t Have to Clean Your Dentures

Even though dentures replace your teeth, they don’t replace the need to continue practicing good oral hygiene. Your gums, tongue, teeth, and dentures alike can all collect food debris and bacteria that’ll cause problems for you and your dentures. They might even fail prematurely! Keeping your mouth as clean as possible will ensure that your dentures last (and don’t become smelly or unpleasant to wear).

If you have missing teeth and are ready to do something about it, don’t let all of the false facts and myths surrounding dentures deter you from getting them. They’re still an effective means of restoring your pearly whites and in turn, your quality of life.

About the Author

The team at Longmont Complete Dentistry is thrilled to serve patients and families in the Longmont, CO area under the leadership of Dr. Dan Maurer and Dr. James Maurer.
